Turning Out and Jumping High on Overs – Turn Out Trouble

Dear Simone, can you give me some tips on how to keep my feet turned out and jump SUPER high on my overs? Thanks! Submitted by Turn Out Trouble

Hey Turn Out Trouble! Happy to help. Turn out is a tricky thing, because it can be explained in many different ways. One thing that you need to know is that turn out comes from your hips and squeezing your butt. Just yanking your toes to the side (a) isn’t going to give you your potential turn out and (b) will be easy in the short term, but damage your body in the long. Practice standing and turning out, rotating your hips, not just your ankle.

Calf and ankle strengthening, jumping rope (scroll down to Method 2 of 2: Jump Rope)ab strengthening (don’t do number eight, do 30-60 reps of mason twists instead), and squeezing your abs while doing overs will all help with more height.
